Education
Education in Brunei is free for all Brunei citizens. Facilities are covered by the Government including tuition, textbooks, supplies, food, transportation and even accommodation for students who live miles away from their school.

There is a minimum period of 12 years in education, comprising 1 year of pre-school, 6 years of primary education and 5 years of secondary education. After that, students may enter local post-secondary and higher education institutions.

The first university in Brunei was Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), followed by Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA). The Ministry of Education also awards scholarships to talented and qualified students, giving opportunities for locals to pursue further studies overseas.

A recent introduction into the education system is SPN 21, or Sistem Pendidikan Negara Abad Ke-21, The National Education System for the 21st Century which has been approved by the Ministry of Education. It aims to equip students with “21st Century skills” so as to meet the social and economic challenges of the 21st Century.
